Artist's Statement:
“Memories of Light explores my ongoing desire to capture and distill remembered moments through the mediums of paint and clay.

These new works begin from a place of nostalgia. Image stills from old movies and photographs illicit a personal and yet also collective sense of shared memories, summer afternoons by the coast, well worn bush tracks or at a table that was filled with laughter and conversation well past the hour of lunch.

Through the use of light and colour I am interested in the mood a painting can convey. Small stolen moments and the intimate spaces between figures, where emotions can be transferred and heightened through the use of paint and a few expressive marks. The forms and figures often become more abstract and less defined around the edges, the way our memory only presents a soft and distorted retelling of reality.

The ceramic vessels continue this exploration in three dimensions, and are intended to be viewed in the round. Using mid fire clay the vessels are slowly coiled and pinched into shape. Glazes and underglazes are applied and develop the narrative in layers of colours as they would be on a canvas, to be read as both small vignettes or one continuous scene.

These paintings and vessels are keepers of memory, a tapestry of what is remembered is painted across their surfaces, and brought into the light once again.”
