Artist's Statement:
“I began painting about 8 years ago after a death meditation. Until then I was a practicing architect. A death meditation isn’t as grim as it sounds. You ask yourself ‘what would you change about your life if you knew you only had a short time to live’. And of course the answer for me was painting. Shortly after that I entered a competition and won which led to closing my architecture practice to become a full time painter.
Since then I have entered, and been a finalist, in numerous art competitions and have even won a few. I have sought out mentorship from some of Australia’s most respected artists including Jenny Bell, Robert Malherbe, Lucy Culliton, Abdul Abdulla and Idris Murphy, as well as American painters Catherine Kehoe and Jennifer Pochinski. My work spans still life, landscape, animals, insects and portraits. That variety is intentional. I never wanted to be pinned to a single genre and I see paintings in everything.
There is an ethos in architecture: let the building become what it wants to be. But to do that you must first understand the site, its history, climate, light and so on. I think like this when I’m painting - something as small as an insect . A fly must be what it wants to be -aside from how I see it as an engineering marvel with glorious iridescent skin and wild, compound eyes, it is a being. The process of painting an insect is my way of saying Your life matters too.”
