Caught in the Moment
"I grew up on a farm in southern NSW, surrounded by rolling hills and open paddocks with bushland on the horizon. From an early age, I would carry a small easel outside to paint, trying to capture the contours and colours of a landscape shaped by farming and windbreak trees.
While practising law in the UK, I continued to draw and paint whenever I could. My resolve to paint full time was cemented when I became a finalist in the Paddington Art Prize in 2016.
I work primarily with oil on canvas, exploring the interplay of shapes, shadows and reflections in still life and landscape, including the whimsical landscapes of my childhood. My process is guided by a search for harmony and order in composition, inviting the viewer to be caught in a moment that holds personal resonance."

Works by Polina Karuso

Polina Karuso is an emerging artist based in Wollombi, in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales. She is a passionate and prolific plein-air landscape painter whose work captures the striking beauty of the local environment.
Primarily working across the Hunter Valley, Polina also explores the distinct atmospheres of other Australian locations including Broken Hill, Lightning Ridge, and Hill End. Her practice is grounded in direct engagement with place, observing and expressing the emotional resonance of the land.
Beyond landscape, Polina’s art delves into spiritual and philosophical conversations—exploring the connection between the inner self and the natural world. Her work often touches on themes of the human condition, relationships, and interpersonal dynamics.
Polina works with a diverse range of media, including charcoal, oil, acrylic, and watercolour.
A notable element of her practice is her choice of surface: small recycled hardwood blocks sourced from a local bush furniture maker. This lends her work a distinctive material presence, physicality, and sense of place.
