'Holy Mackerel'
oil on canvas 50x66.6cm framed
by Cameron Morton
'Holy Mackerel' plays with the conventions of classical still life while slipping in a dose of forensic drama. Four quinces rest neatly on a plate, with a fifth cut open and set to the side. A knife lies beside it, a familiar motif in traditional still-life painting, but here it becomes a piece of evidence. A miniature figure of Quincy, the TV forensic pathologist known for his trademark white coat and exasperated catchphrase, leans in to inspect the blade, intent on determining who sliced the quince. I sought to present a gentle parody that blends fruit, formality, and television nostalgia into a playful narrative investigation.
